UC Santa Cruz Job Announcement: FCP Integrative Ecological Modeler Job ID 66340
Initial Review Date is April 15, 2024.

The Fisheries Collaborative Program (FCP) at University of California, Santa Cruz is seeking an Integrative Ecological Modeler to address challenges in integrative research on salmon and their ecosystems in California. The FCP is a community of UC and NOAA fisheries researchers focused on providing science to support management and recovery of living marine resources of California, and has a diverse research portfolio spanning multiple ecosystems, spatial scales, and levels of biological organization. This new position will be under the general direction of an FCP Research Team Lead and in collaboration with university PIs and NOAA collaborators. As a member of the FCP, the incumbent will provide computer programming and data management expertise to support a workgroup of researchers using quantitative life-cycle models to integrate diverse research findings for endangered salmon metapopulations in California. The incumbent will contribute to the development of a reproducible model integration system to couple ecological, genetic, and environmental models.

This position requires a strong aptitude for computer programming. Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  1. Provide programming support for a team developing recovery scenarios for winter-run Chinook salmon, using existing quantitative models;
  2. Refine or update the programming toolbox used by this team for model integration, using established approaches in the field of computer science and emphasizing reproducible approaches;
  3. Use the tools to support FCP teams developing new integrated life-cycle models for other salmon metapopulations in California. Programming support will include generating code to integrate scientific models written in a variety of program languages (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, SQLite, Java, etc) to streamline workflow and couple models. This will require the incumbent to provide guidance for data systems management, provide clear documentation of workflow, demonstrate familiarity with large datasets and version control, demonstrate familiarity with cloud computing, and demonstrate a commitment to the FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reproducible) guiding principles. Once the model integration workflow is established for a specific project focused on endangered winter-run Chinook salmon, the workflow will be adapted to incorporate ecological models generated by researchers within the broader FCP community. This is an opportunity for the incumbent to generate novel workflows and communicate effectively with senior scientists to codify best practices for computational ecology and reproducible methods for an environmental researcher community working on fundamental environmental problems in California.

The hiring unit will not sponsor employment-eligible immigration statuses for this position.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking for an Invertebrate Lead Scientist for their Fish Restoration Program (FRP). This position is a mixture of field work, analysis, writing, cross-organization collaboration, growth opportunities, boats, “bugs” of all sorts, fish, and mud, working closely with an amazing team of dedicated professionals.

Job Description and Duties

Large-scale tidal wetland restoration undertaken by the Fish Restoration Program (FRP) in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and Suisun Marsh is meant to provide food resources and habitat for endangered and threatened fishes, but will it? Join the team conducting the effectiveness monitoring to answer that question! The FRP Monitoring Team is seeking a highly motivated scientist to lead the charge in assessing how macroinvertebrate and zooplankton communities and abundance change due to restoration. The position involves leading periodically intense bouts of boat-based field work, wrangling and analysis of large datasets, writing for multiple audiences, and collaborating with scientists from a variety of disciplines and organizations. Your teammates would include a close-knit small team of environmental scientists leading similar program components focused on fish communities, invertebrate taxonomy, and water quality and primary productivity. Apply by the final filing date for the opportunity to make a difference in the understanding and management of one of California's most dynamic and impacted ecosystems.

In order to be eligible for this position, you must either be transfer eligible or take and pass the following Environmental Scientist exam. For those who haven’t navigated the California state employment system before, establishing eligibility is required for the Environmental Scientist classification, and resources can be found at Employment Opportunities (ca.gov) and CalCareers. I’m also happy to talk folks through the process and to provide more information on the position. Contact Stacy Sherman at Stacy.Sherman@wildlife.ca.gov.

You will find additional information about the job in the Duty Statement (pdf).
