The Lodi Fish and Wildlife Office is excited to announce THREE openings for temporary Biological (fish) Technicians.

ALL eligible candidates will be considered.

Job Duties:

These positions are in the Lodi office and will be working primarily in the field on both the Delta Juvenile Fish Monitoring Program and Enhanced Delta Smelt Monitoring Program.

Activities include:

  • Conducts fish surveys using active and passive collection methods, including electrofishing, beach seines, and boat trawls.
  • Collects water quality parameters with appropriate meters and identifies fish to species using fish identification keys while recovering coded-wire tags from specimens.
  • Collects biological samples with proper documentation, reporting, and storage; enters and organizes data in established databases, performing preliminary analysis using standard statistical methods for report preparation.

The LFWO is the US Fish and Wildlife Service's largest Fish and Aquatic Conservation office and consists of programs focused on Delta fish and habitat monitoring and anadromous fish restoration.

The Red Bluff Fish and Wildlife Office is excited to announce THREE openings for temporary seasonal Biological (fish) Technicians.

ALL eligible candidates will be considered.

Job Duties:

These positions are in the Red Bluff office and will be working primarily in the field, on either the Mainstem Juvenile Fish Monitoring program or the Hatchery Evaluation program. Activities include sampling out-migrating juvenile salmon using Rotary Screw Traps, counting post-spawned salmon by boat survey, collecting fish migration data using acoustic telemetry, collecting samples and bio-data from juvenile and adult salmon at hatcheries, retrieving and decoding coded wire tags, and assisting with juvenile sturgeon rearing habitat use data collection efforts, among other projects. Join our team doing important work for anadromous fish management in the Sacramento Valley!

Background on the Red Bluff FWO & Red Bluff Area:

The Red Bluff FWO is an office of 50+ people with a variety of programs, including monitoring anadromous fish populations in the Sacramento River and its tributaries, and implementing and evaluating restoration projects, water operations, and hatcheries in the northern Central Valley of California. This is an excellent area to work with anadromous fish as Chinook Salmon (all four runs endemic to the area), steelhead, lamprey, and sturgeon are all here.

Red Bluff is a small rural town (approx. pop. 14,000), with the larger cities of Redding and Chico about 30-40 minutes north and south, respectively. Redding has river-based tourist attractions at Caldwell Park and Turtle Bay Museum and Arboretum, is surrounded by mountains, and at the north end of the valley, has the best chance of snow in the winter. Chico is a college town (home to California State University, Chico) and boasts one of the largest municipal parks in the country, with the adjacent foothills a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers.

The area has many outdoor recreational opportunities close by, including Lassen Volcanic National Park, Whiskeytown Lake and National Recreation Area, Mt. Shasta Ski Park, and Lakes Shasta and Oroville, with a plethora of hunting and fishing opportunities on nearby public lands. Sacramento International Airport is about 1.5 hours south of us. With a 3-4 hour drive from Red Bluff, you can get to world-class skiing at Lake Tahoe, hike in the Sierras, see a Shakespearian play in Ashland Oregon, experience the north coast for fresh seafood and ocean fishing, or go to San Francisco for its world-renowned charm.

The California Department of Water Resources has a Quality Assurance Scientist (Environmental Scientist) position available in the Quality Assurance (QA) Unit. The QA Unit supports DWR staff in collection of water-related data that is scientifically sound, consistent, valid, and comparable with data within DWR and with outside agencies and partnerships. This is implemented through the Department’s Quality Assurance and Quality Control Policy for Water-Related Monitoring Programs (WRM 60). The QA Unit is seeking a motivated, creative professional with a passion for data quality, environmental monitoring, and data management. The incumbent will work independently and as part of a team to develop and implement quality assurance and quality control standards and procedures for environmental data collection, data review, and data management. The incumbent will work collaboratively to develop new tools and QA guidance for research and monitoring projects; review quality documents; develop and implement quality assurance trainings; and support quality process assessments. The California Department of Water Resources has an opening for a Senior Water Quality Scientist (Senior Environmental Scientist, Specialist) to join their team as a Water Quality Technical Lead. This position offers an exciting and rewarding opportunity to lead special studies that support mandated monitoring programs, quality assurance and control initiatives, and data management efforts. Duties

As a Small Craft Operator your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Regularly operates navigates, dock/cast-off, and fuel inboard, outboard, and inboard/outboard, powered vessels, including but not limited to: prop boats, jet boats, from 3 to 13 meters in length (occasionally larger) to facilitate biological sampling of the San Francisco Estuary.
  • Maintains, services, tracks, and performs minor repairs on all vessels and attached or associated equipment, including sampling gear, vessels, marine diesel and gasoline engines, drive systems and boat trailers.
  • Assures adherence to safety protocols by all personnel on board and assists in the training of vessel operators and other personnel.

The Center for Watershed Sciences at the University of California, Davis seeks to potentially fill 3 non-tenured, academic term appointments as a Junior Specialist. This position will aid in interdisciplinary studies of the interactions of hydrology and ecology in montane stream and meadow systems.

Research (90%)
Duties include participation in field studies to collect aquatic habitat data, biologic data, geospatial data using GPS equipment, and water quality attributes; management of large databases and datasets; literature review and data collection associated with the application of environmental flows and stream restoration; and participation in data entry, post-processing, data synthesis, and statistical analysis.

Professional Competence & Activity (5%)
Conduct literature searches and help write annual reports to funders. Participation in the creative activities of publishing research and designing future research including reviewing journal articles; engaging in discussions of research to assist in interpreting results; and assisting senior researchers in preparing manuscripts for peer-review journals. Present research results at local and regional scientific meetings, if applicable.

University and Public Service (5%)
