The Red Bluff FWO is an office of 50+ people with a variety of programs, including monitoring anadromous fish populations in the Sacramento River and its tributaries, and implementing and evaluating restoration projects, water operations, and hatcheries in the northern Central Valley of California. This is an excellent area to work with anadromous fish as Chinook Salmon (all four runs endemic to the area), steelhead, lamprey, and sturgeon are all here.
Red Bluff is a small rural town (approx. pop. 14,000), with the larger cities of Redding and Chico about 30-40 minutes north and south, respectively. Redding has river-based tourist attractions at Caldwell Park and Turtle Bay Museum and Arboretum, is surrounded by mountains, and at the north end of the valley, has the best chance of snow in the winter. Chico is a college town (home to California State University, Chico) and boasts one of the largest municipal parks in the country, with the adjacent foothills a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers.
The area has many outdoor recreational opportunities close by, including Lassen Volcanic National Park, Whiskeytown Lake and National Recreation Area, Mt. Shasta Ski Park, and Lakes Shasta and Oroville, with a plethora of hunting and fishing opportunities on nearby public lands. Sacramento International Airport is about 1.5 hours south of us. With a 3-4 hour drive from Red Bluff, you can get to world-class skiing at Lake Tahoe, hike in the Sierras, see a Shakespearian play in Ashland Oregon, experience the north coast for fresh seafood and ocean fishing, or go to San Francisco for its world-renowned charm.
