Modeling Unit Specialist - CA Department of Fish and Wildlife
The Water Branch at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has a vacancy for a Modeling Unit Specialist (classification Senior Environmental Scientist, Specialist).
Job Description and Duties
Do you want to work at the interface of science and policy? Would you like for your science to directly inform how the State of California manages water? Come join us and take a lead role in the conservation of threatened and endangered fish species of California.
California is a biodiversity hotspot, worldwide leader in environmental public policy, the most populous state in the nation, fifth largest economy in the world, and a global leader in agricultural production. As a result, conservation and resource management are inherently complex and span multiple disciplines including ecology, engineering, law, program administration, and fiscal management. Working in the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to conserve our natural resources is a challenging and rewarding career.
Advanced modeling and data analysis techniques have proven integral to addressing the most complex and consequential questions related to the management of threatened and endangered fish species in the Central Valley. Both quantitative and leadership skills are essential to ensure that modeling and data analysis contributions are transparent, collaborative, and result in durable products that are supported across agencies and stakeholders. We are seeking candidates with strong communication skills and a passion for collaboration, data analysis, statistical modeling, and mechanistic modeling as well as a desire to teach and mentor junior technical staff. This position will engage in data analysis and modeling efforts alongside other quantitative ecologists in CDFW’s Water Branch as well as other peers across CDFW, state and federal partner agencies, and stakeholder groups. In this role, you will lead and contribute to technical projects dedicated to permitting the largest water infrastructure projects in the state, including ongoing operations of the State Water Project and the Delta Conveyance Project.
